The fourth-generation iPod Nano marks further evolution of an already-strong media player

The latest iPod Nano combines the larger screen of the third-generation Nano with the slender design and vibrant colors of the second-generation models. Taken as a whole, the fourth-generation iPod Nano marks the further evolution of an already-strong media player, but it will disappoint anyone who was expecting a complete overhaul. The 8GB model sells for $149 ($50 less than its predecessor), and the new 16GB model comes in at $199. The iPod Nano is almost identical in height and width to its second-generation grandparent, bucking the wider-but-shorter design adopted for the third-generation model. When I saw the new iPod Nano, the first thing I thought of was the flash-based Zune from Microsoft. The screen's portrait orientation means you must turn the Nano on its side to play video; but since the Nano now has a motion sensor, the video orients itself properly depending on how you hold the Nano.
Turning the unit on its side for video works well, though not as well as it does with the iPhone or the iPod Touch because having the screen on one side and the navigation wheel on the other makes the iPod Nano seem out-of-balance. The iPod Nano has a slender, tapered design. At its thickest point, the iPod Nano is 0.24 inch thick--a barely perceptible 0.06 inch thinner than the previous model. The new iPod Nano is also about 0.5 ounce lighter than its predecessor. The latest version also ushers in brighter, more vivid case colors--a departure from the muted tones of the previous generation. Since the Nano itself has a curved face, the glass that covers the screen is curved, too; during normal use I didn't notice any distortion caused by the curved glass cover. Audio sounds adequate through the included earbuds, though you may want to upgrade to Apple's forthcoming, step-up $80 earphones or to a high-quality pair from a third-party manufacturer. You have good reason to upgrade your headphones: According to our tests, the latest iPod Nano improves its audio output as compared with its predecessor, jumping up a notch to receive a rating of Superior on the PC World Test Center's suite of audio tests. The Nano, together with its new Touch sibling, are our new leaders in our audio output results.

A new Copperlink HDMI converter

The Copperlink 2353 accepts a SMPTE compliant 3G/HD/SD-SDI input via coax, automatically detects and selects the output resolution with no scaling and converts it to HDMI. If audio is present in the SDI data stream, the operator can choose one of up to 8 pairs of stereo audio to embed into the HDMI baseband signal as well as output on the convenient audio RCA connections. Alternatively, the operator may choose to mute any existing audio.

This new Copperlink HDMI converter is ideal for all broadcast applications, says Paul Seiden, Director of Sales. Now, integrators and broadcast engineers can manage their video and audio signals in a very repeatable and predictable manner using SDI while cost effectively integrating low-cost, high definition displays and computer monitors. A confidence monitoring application for example; you can route and switch your SDI signal to multiple HDMI displays and select a different language or audio pair to output at each display without having to purchase expensive, production quality reference displays."

The Copperlink 2353 supports SMPTE 259M, 292 and 424M-2006 and the input signal is equalized and reclocked. Standard on Copperlink 2353 is a reclocked BNC loop output for continuous 3G/HD/SD-SDI signal distribution. The unit is immune to pathological signals over the entire operating temperature range.

Available in a small footprint box, it is ideal for broadcast or corporate studios, OB vans.

Apple Inking Deals With Big Four Labels For iTune Cloud-Music Service

Apple's efforts to launch a new cloud-based music storageservice for iTunes users are gaining steam-the company has reportedly already inked a deals with Warner Music Group and at least one of the remaining three largest music labels.
Apple has reached a license agreement to offer Warner's music ahead of the launch of what industry watchers believe will be an online music "locker" service similar to one Amazon launched last month, CNET reported Friday.
A day earlier, AllThingsDigtial reported that Apple had inked deals with two major labels and that vice-president of Internet services Eddy Cue would be in New York on Friday to negotiate deals with the remaining two.
In addition to Warner, the top three music labels are Universal Music Group, Sony and EMI.
If the reports, which cite unnamed music industry sources, are accurate it would mean Apple would be launching its anticipated cloud-music service very differently than its rival rolled out its own music locker offering. Amazon launched without licensing agreements from major labels.
After facing threats of legal action from some companies, Amazon last week began holding talks with some labels to strike deals on licensing for the service.
One unnamed industry executive quoted by AllThingsDigital gave the impression that Apple is on the brink of launching the new iTunes service.
"They've been very aggressive and thoughtful about it," the executive was quoted as saying. "It feels like they want to go pretty soon."
Apple's efforts to build up its cloud presence have been well-documented of late. The company has built a massive data center in North Carolina that's rumored to be intended for a streaming video service, and reportedly has plans to expand its datacenter infrastructure even further.
Meanwhile, Google's plans for its own music service tied in to its Android mobile OS have "stalled," according to a report this week from Reuters.
Google "keep[s] changing what they're asking for," said one unnamed label executive quoted by the wire service.
Other sources pointed to a management shakeup at Google-co-founder Larry Page replaced Eric Schmidt as CEO in early April-as the cause of delays in the company's music efforts.

You can download the latest version of reds now here.
Please Note : Jailbreak does not mean unlock, if your device is locked to a carrier network this will not work to unlock your device.

The board will consider approval of the handbook changes

Assistant Principal Jeff DeWalt gave the OTHS board copies of proposed changes to the 2011-2012 student handbook during the board meeting Monday. The changes were recommendations by the handbook committee for the board to consider for approval at next month's meeting.

One proposal is to allow students to use their cell phones during their lunch periods. DeWalt said other schools in the conference have gone this route and found it cuts down on incidents of students trying to use their phones during class time.

Another proposed change would allow final exam exemptions for all classes, not just seniors. Those exemptions must be earned through attendance, grades and behavior. Freshmen could earn one exemption per semester; sophomores could earn two exemptions per semester; three possible exemptions for juniors and four for seniors.

The board also will consider a change to the alcohol and drug use policy for student athletes and others in extracurricular activities. Right now, the policy is only applied during the actual season of the sport or activity. Under the change, the policy would be in effect year round. For example, if a student who only played baseball violates the policy during the fall, it would still impact his baseball season.

Other language and clarification changes are also being considered, but those revisions are minor, saidDeWalt.

The board will consider approval of the handbook changes at the May 16 board meeting.

HDMI Media Player review

We have to admire the candidness of the manual of the Xenta HDMI Media Player. At first we dismissed the 12-page guide as the usual token hodge-podge of information. But shame on us, as it's actually a perfectly sound and easy-to-follow sheet of data to get you up and running.

The highlight for us was the troubleshooting section, listing common problems. The second of these? ¡°Remote control useless¡±! We wouldn't quite go that far, but if you had no idea of the price of the Xenta unit before you saw the remote, you'd be left in no doubt that you were flying economy class afterwards.

That said, the construction, feel and appearance of the unit itself all contribute to that conclusion. It arrives in an unassuming box, which includes composite leads, the power cable, the comparably tiny unit itself and the aforementioned manual. It feels cheap and, with room for a USB or flash card, an HDMI cable and component output only on the box, our hopes weren't through the roof.
